Fern & Lois will offer flowers and gifts, including home decor, books, children’s toys and more.

The owner of Devil’s Food Bakery and The Cookery at Myrtle Hill plans to open a flower and gift shop called Fern & Lois at 1000 S. Gaylord St., two storefronts down from her bakery.

Coworking firm Park opened along South Gaylord last year, and another office is under construction across the street from Devil’s Food. Pilloud said she believes the neighborhood is asking for more retail.

“There’s been a lot of changes on the block,” she said. “I think people are just really wanting to make sure there’s still going to be shops.”

Fern & Lois is taking 1,400 square feet at the corner of Gaylord and East Tennessee Avenue. Gift items will include home decor, candles, art, books and children’s toys, and potentially home goods, furniture and antiques, Pilloud said.

The store is expected to open in Wash Park this fall.

This will be Fern & Lois’ second location. Pilloud opened the first in January at 2378 S. Downing St. near Porter Adventist Hospital.

Pilloud signed a three-year lease for the 1000 S. Gaylord St. unit, which is currently occupied by Center Strength Studios. Center Strength owner Suzanne Fanch told BusinessDen last year she planned to consolidate two studio locations into one at 1058 S. Gaylord St.

Other recent changes to the South Gaylord retail mix include the November closures of 45-year-old gift shop The Tended Thicket and two pet-related businesses.
