A bus company is closing its Denver facility and laying off nearly 200 workers after losing a contract with the Regional Transportation District.
The shuttering of MV Transportation’s facility at 30 S. Raritan St. in the Valverde neighborhood will affect 198 employees based there, according to a letter the company sent to the state.
Dallas-based MV, which did not respond to requests for comment, provides transportation for people with disabilities. Locally, MV Transportation is one of multiple companies that has had a contract to operate Access-A-Ride and FlexRide services for RTD.
RTD issued a new request for proposals last December seeking firms to continue providing those services. MV was one of five companies that responded, according to RTD’s website, but it was not selected. At a late-March meeting, the district’s board of directors approved contracts with three other companies, records show. The new contracts go into effect July 1.
MV told the state its employees, who are unionized, will be let go within two weeks of June 30. The company has over 15,000 employees and operates in 30 states, according to its website.
MV appears to lease its facility in Valverde, where the company said all its operations are ceasing.
The company notified the state in an effort to comply with the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires employers to provide advance notice of plant closings and significant layoffs.
Other companies that have informed the state of layoffs this year include the British sports apparel firm Gymshark, California-based Specialized Bicycles, lighting manufacturer Pinnacle Architectural Lighting, automobile seat cover makers GT covers, a subsidiary of Broomfield-based Vail Resorts, the health insurer Friday and the construction tech company Prescient.
