Call it Epic vs. Ikon.

The biggest rivalry in the ski resort industry ramped up this week, as newly branded ski conglomerate Alterra Mountain Co. revealed the name and some details of its multi-mountain annual pass.

Alterra’s new Ikon Pass will include access to 23 resorts, the company said. That compares to 15 North American resorts included in the Epic Pass, the decade-old pass offered by Vail Resorts.

In addition to the 12 resorts Alterra owns, including Steamboat and Winter Park Resort in Colorado, the Ikon Pass gives access to 11 other properties across the U.S. and Canada — totaling nearly 50,000 skiable acres.

The partners include Utah-based Powdr Corp., owner of Colorado’s Copper Mountain and Eldora Mountain Resort. The pass also includes resorts from Aspen Snowmass’ Mountain Collective pass, including Snowbird, Jackson Hole and Alta.

The Mountain Collective pass, which gives buyers two-day passes to 16 resorts, will continue this coming season. The Rocky Mountain Superpass, which allows access to five Colorado resorts, will be discontinued.

Not all Rocky Mountain Superpass and Mountain Collective properties made the transition to Ikon. Telluride and Crested Butte are two Colorado resorts left off.

Alterra has yet to release the price of the Ikon Pass. Vail charges $850 for its Epic Pass.

The combined company released details of its new pass at Denver’s Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show, which kicked off Thursday and runs through Sunday.
