UniPath submitted a layoff notice to the state this month.

Update (11/20/20): Following publication of this story, Stefanie Marsh, senior vice president of American Pathology Partners, told BusinessDen the company has “entered into an agreement to sell our Denver laboratory.”

“As a part of this acquisition, we are pleased that many of the jobs will remain in Denver,” Marsh said.

Marsh said she could not comment further regarding details of the sale.

Original story: Private pathology lab UniPath is closing a 40,000-square-foot facility in Denver.

The lab’s parent company, American Pathology Partners, told the state in a letter last week that it plans to close the facility at 6116 E. Warren Ave. by Feb. 5. The facility’s 154 employees will be laid off starting Jan. 22.

The letter did not identify a reason for the layoffs, and the company did not respond to a request for comment by press time.

UniPath, which works with office-based clinicians, surgery centers and hospitals in Colorado to diagnose infectious diseases and other conditions, was acquired by Nashville-based American Pathology Partners in 2008.

The company notified the state in an effort to comply with the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires large employers to provide advance notice of plant closings and significant layoffs.

In May, UniPath began offering COVID-19 testing to Denver employers who were anxious to get their workers back on the job, according to a press release. It later processed COVID-19 test results for the state, according to the Denver Post.

Last year, the Denver-based private pathology lab acquired Cedar Diagnostics, a full-service clinical laboratory in Durango, according to a press release.

Outside of UniPath, American Pathology Partners, which was founded in 2008, has a network of five private pathology labs that it has acquired over the years in North Carolina, Florida and Texas.
