Mauricio and Rebeca Ramos spent nearly a year searching for their dream home in Denver before buying 834 S. Columbine St. in early January.

They bought the 6,500-square-foot home in Belcaro and Bonnie Brae from former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and his wife Peggy, for $250,000 under the $4.9 million list price

The couple, who moved to Denver for Ramos’ job as an executive with a commercial construction company, wanted a home near their children’s school and were drawn by the curb appeal of the curving street with mature trees.

Ramos said the family also liked the modern farmhouse design and the size of the lot, which includes a backyard and a three-car garage.

“We love the large window in the front that lets in a lot of natural light,” Ramos said. “Even the basement gets natural light from that front window.”

The Denver home, designed by architect Carlos Alvarez, has four bedrooms and six bathrooms.

Like the Ramos family, the Shanahans appreciated the home’s natural light, three-car garage, and yard space. They previously answered questions about the home via email.

Peggy Shanahan said the home’s curb appeal drew her in when they drove through the neighborhood. “A big plus was it was the only home we looked at that Mike really liked.”

The Shanahans listed the Denver home for $4.9 million on Sept. 29 with Sandy Weigand of Kentwood Real Estate DTC.

Shannon Tiger of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty represented the Ramoses in the transaction, which closed on Jan. 6.

The Shanahans purchased the home in November 2021, weeks after selling their Cherry Hills Village mansion for $15.7 million. At the time, it was the metro area’s highest price paid for a single-family home sale.

The Denver home was a transition house, while the Shanahans built a new home in Cherry Hills Village. The couple said their new home is smaller than their previous one and “far more contemporary than any home we have ever owned. ”

They plan to stay in the Denver area. “We will always make Denver our primary base as we absolutely love this city and feel very loyal to it and all the close friends and relationships we have established here over the years.”

Mike Shanahan, who retired as an NFL coach in 2013, was the Broncos’ head coach from 1995 to 2008 and led the team to two consecutive Super Bowl championships during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

The Shanahan’s former mansion no longer holds the top-price record. In August, Josh Kroenke, president of the Denver Nuggets and Avalanche, used 5780 Residence LLC to purchase a 12,000-square-foot mansion at 5 Cherry Hills Park Drive for $15.75 million. According to REcolorado records, it was the most expensive on-market sale in Cherry Hills Village.

Former Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson’s off-market purchase of nearby 10 Cherry Hills Park Drive in April 2022 for $25 million remains the priciest single-family home sale in the metro area.
