Former Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and his wife Peggy are selling their Belcaro mansion.
The couple bought the newly constructed 6,500-square-foot home at 834 S. Columbine St. in November 2021, weeks after they sold their Cherry Hills Village mansion.
The Denver home, designed by architect Carlos Alvarez, has four bedrooms and six bathrooms. It also has an oversized three-car garage that looks like a guest house.
“So many urban properties do not allow for a true three-car garage,” said Shanahan. He and his wife answered questions about the home in email correspondence with BusinessDen.
“Our location is pretty special as I can back out of the garage and easily go left, right, or straight ahead as there is a rare amount of space in the alley directly behind our home.
“We looked at many urban properties prior to purchasing our home, and there just wasn’t the yard space I had hoped for,” he said.
Peggy Shanahan said the home’s curb appeal drew her in when they drove through the neighborhood. “A big plus was it was the only home we looked at that Mike really liked.”
She also enjoys the open flow of the main level, which makes the home ideal for entertaining, and appreciates the large windows that fill the home with natural light.
The Shanahans listed their Denver home for $4.9 million on Sept. 29 with Sandy Weigand of Kentwood Real Estate DTC.
The home has been a transition house while the couple builds a new home in Cherry Hills Village. The new home will be smaller than their previous Cherry Hills house and “far more contemporary than any home we have ever owned,” the Shanahans said.
“We will always make Denver our primary base as we absolutely love this city and feel very loyal to it and all the close friends and relationships we have established here over the years.”
The Shanahans enjoy living on a quiet street without traffic noise.
“It has been a really fun experience for us to be close to Cherry Creek with easy access to downtown, our friends in nearby neighborhoods, and still easy access to our restaurant.”
The $4.3 million purchase for 834 S. Columbine closed on Nov. 9, 2021, weeks after the Shanahans sold their Cherry Hills Village property for a then-record $15.7 million. Documents filed with the Denver Recorder’s office list the home’s owner as 834 S. Columbine LLC.
When the Shanahans sold their 32,000-square-foot mansion at 8 Cherry Hills Park Drive, it was the metro area’s highest single-family home sale. Initially listed for $22 million in 2016, the mansion’s price dropped to $19.8 million in 2019 and $16.95 million in 2021.
The Shanahans bought the land from Janet Elway, ex-wife of former Broncos quarterback John Elway, for $4 million in 2006. The home was completed in 2008. It was sold under the entity 8 Cherry Hills LLC, which Shanahan managed.
In August, Josh Kroenke, president of the Denver Nuggets and Avalanche, purchased a 12,000-square-foot mansion at 5 Cherry Hills Park Drive for $15.75 million using 5780 Residence LLC.
That was the most expensive on-market sale in Cherry Hills Village, according to REcolorado records.
Former Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson’s off-market purchase of nearby 10 Cherry Hills Park Drive in April 2022 for $25 million remains the priciest single-family home sale in the metro area.
Shanahan, who retired as an NFL coach in 2013, was the Broncos’ head coach from 1995 to 2008 and led the team to two consecutive Super Bowl championships during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
