WinCo Foods is looking to take a bite out of the Colorado grocery scene.

The Idaho-based grocer submitted plans to Thornton for a new store in January and bought land in Firestone in February. They would be the business’s first locations in Colorado.

WinCo declined to comment on its Colorado plans.

Public records show the company is planning to develop an 84,000-square-foot grocery store on nearly 17 acres at the southeast corner of 164th Ave and Washington Street in Thornton. It would be open 24/7, like most of the brand’s locations, which are employee-owned.

About 13 miles to the north sits a 10-acre undeveloped lot just north of Firestone Boulevard along Union Street. WinCo purchased the site for $3.6 million, records show. That works out to $8.30 per square foot for the land.

The company hasn’t submitted development plans for the site yet, according to Katie Hansen, a spokeswoman for Firestone.

WinCo, which does not accept credit cards, has locations across the western U.S., from Washington to Arizona, with a handful of stores scattered across Oklahoma and Texas.
