Restaurant property in West Wash Park sells six weeks after closure

Six weeks removed from its last dinner service, the West Wash Park building that formerly housed the restaurant Bittersweet has been sold. 

The 2,000-square-foot building at 500 E. Alameda Ave. sold last week for $1.69 million to 500 Alameda Ave LLC, according to public records. The deal works out to about $856 a square foot.

Records show the purchasing entity is managed by Li Hong Li, who helps run the Asian restaurant Fortune Wok to Table in Cherry Creek.

In a brief phone conversation Tuesday, Li said she hasn’t finalized plans for the Wash Park property. She said she’ll work with her head chef, CJ Shyr, to develop a concept for the space.

The property, once a gas station, was converted to a restaurant in 2010, when Bittersweet opened. Olav Peterson and his wife, Melissa Severson, ran the eatery. Severson’s parents purchased the property in 2010 for $607,000, records show. 

BusinessDen first reported in April the property was being marketed for sale or lease. At that time, the building was listed at $1.95 million, or for lease at $45 to $50 per square foot. Bittersweet subsequently closed in September, in part because Peterson and Severson were getting a divorce, according to Westword.

“Twelve years is a lifetime in the restaurant industry, and I’m so glad we were able to do what we did,” Peterson told Westword in September.

Fortune Wok to Table opened in late 2017 and will soon celebrate its sixth birthday. The restaurant features a fast-casual dumpling and noodle eatery on the bottom floor and a fine-dining area upstairs.
