Thieves are increasingly targeting construction sites.

In the first half of 2022, there were 289 reported incidents of thefts or burglary at construction sites. That’s 36 percent higher than the same time period in 2021, when only 212 incidents were reported, according to police.

One such theft took place at about 5:30 a.m. on March 10. About $20,000 in tools and materials was stolen from 625 Santa Fe Drive, where a condo building is under construction, according to flyers posted nearby by Dohn Construction.

Denver police said an investigation of that theft is ongoing and that the department could not share additional details.

Contacted about the rise in thefts, Dohn Construction and several other general contractors either declined to comment or did not respond.

Dohn Construction is one of many firms that have had their Denver construction sites burglarized.

Denver police shared a flier with BusinessDen with tips to keep construction sites secure:

  • • Mark your property. “Record serial numbers of tools and valuables and mark them with a unique serial number or marking. You can also register your property at www.reportit.leadsonline.com.”
  • • No trespassing. “Contact your local community resource officer and complete a no trespassing agreement and post no trespassing signage. This allows officers to enforce trespassing laws after hours when you are not present.”
  • • Secure tools and materials.
  • • Ensure the site has proper lighting and surveillance fixtures.
  • • Know who to contact in the event of an emergency.
  • • Protect heavy equipment with tracking systems, IDs and wheel locks.
  • • Review security information with everyone who will be on site.
