One sanctioned homeless encampment in Denver is closing, and another is opening.
Colorado Village Collaborative, the nonprofit that operates the campsites, said Monday that the existing campsite on the campus of Regis University, which opened in June 2021, will close next month.
It will be replaced by a campsite at 221 Federal Blvd., a tract of land that is owned by St. Francis Center, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado that also operates a homeless shelter in Arapahoe Square.
St. Francis Center, which has been helping operate the Regis location, purchased the 0.61-acre site along Federal in January for $1 million, records show. The organization plans to build income-restricted housing at the site.
The campsite is expected to open June 2 and remain in place for a year, CVC said. It will have space for up to 60 people.
This will be the seventh location to host a sanctioned campsite since late 2020. Two other campsites operate on Denver Health-owned property at 8th Avenue and Elati Street in Lincoln Park and on city-owned property at 3815 Steele St. in Clayton.
In February, the Denver City Council approved a $3.9 million contract with CVC to operate the campsites. That was on top of $900,000 which was approved in February 2021.
