An auto repair shop at the edge of downtown since 1965 is being planned for redevelopment.
Tennessee-based GBT Realty Corp. submitted a concept plan to the city of Denver last month proposing the construction of a 25-story residential building at 2000 N. Broadway, currently home to a Firestone shop.
GBT already owns the approximately half-acre property, having paid $5.4 million in May 2021 to purchase it from Bridgestone Retail Operations LLC, records show. Bridgestone and Firestone merged in the 1980s.
A GBT representative declined to comment on the proposal. Firestone has operated at the site for 57 years, a store manager confirmed by phone Wednesday. A Denver Post photo from 1965 shows the building hasn’t significantly changed.
Concept plans are an early-stage development proposal, sometimes submitted years before physical construction begins. Bridgestone spokeswoman Jackie Huser didn’t provide a timeline for when the shop might close.
“We are working closely with the property owner to better understand the future plans and timing for this development,” she said. “We are committed to taking care of our employees who work at this location and our customers who depend on Firestone Complete Auto Care for their automotive service needs.”
Huser said the company is “constantly assessing our store footprint,” and noted that Bridgestone has about 30 other stores in the Denver area. The first Firestone store opened in 1926 and “we have a number of legacy stores still in operation today.”
GBT’s proposed building would have 262 residential units and 247 parking spaces in one underground level and multiple above-ground levels, according to the plans. It would not feature ground-floor retail space.
There would be some amenity space, such as a dog park and outdoor terrace, on the fifth floor. A gym and pool would be located on the 23rd floor. Above that would be mechanical space, which GBT appears to be including when its plans describe the building as 25 stories.
Gresham Smith of Nashville is listed as the architect on the project.
The Firestone facility, which is still operating, is located across Broadway from a Goodyear repair facility, which sits on a 0.34-acre triangular block. That property is being marketed for sale by Marcus & Millichap for $5.2 million. Goodyear has leased the property since 1987, and last year extended its lease through the end of 2031, according to marketing materials available on LoopNet.
