With 20 years of experience in Denver’s floral industry, Katie Carrera was ready to bloom on her own.

Last month, the Denver native branched off and opened Fern and Bloom at 4014 Tennyson St. in Berkeley.

“I have been working in floral shops since high school and have always dreamed of having my own store,” Carrera said.

The business offers a variety of floral arrangements, plants and even weekly bouquet subscriptions hand-designed or picked by Carrera. It also caters to weddings and events, and sells mostly local and female-made jewelry and pottery, along with vintage home goods.

“Plants are a big selling point because everyone is at home nesting and wanting to bring life inside,” Carrera said.

Although she never studied floral design in college, Carrera, now 39, always had a side gig in a flower shop growing up and quickly fell in love.

After her last job as manager of Fiori Flowers in Boulder, she created her own freelance floral design company under the name KCarrera Design in 2019, which provided flowers for corporate accounts, weddings and large-scale events.

“I wanted to wait for a great retail opportunity that was the right fit for me as a native,” Carrera said. “And when this real estate popped up, I decided, COVID or not, I needed to make it happen now or I never would.”

The florist signed a year lease for the 750-square-foot space in September and renamed the business as an homage to her late grandmother, Iona Fern.

“I’m just really excited to share the things that I find beautiful and draw people in with my own designs this time around,” Carrera said.
