Aldi plans to open a store in Denver’s Central Park neighborhood.
It’s the first known store proposal within the state. The grocery chain said in January that it planned to enter the Colorado market, with 50 stores in and around Colorado Springs and Denver.
Plans submitted to Denver this week call for a 19,500-square-foot store to be built on 2.3 acres at 9111 E. 40th Ave., between a Cracker Barrel and a Chick-fil-A.
The site is southeast of the Interstate 70-Central Park Boulevard interchange within the Runway 35 South project being developed by Evergreen.
The store would sell beer and wine and have 109 parking spaces, according to the proposal submitted by local engineering firm Atwell.
Aldi offers a no-frills shopping experience, with lots of private labels but fewer options than traditional grocery stores. It is known for its low prices.
The company, which is in about 40 states, said in January that it would open a distribution center in Aurora.
Central Park, the suburban-style neighborhood built where Denver’s airport used to be, is seeing a grocery boom.
Whole Foods plans a store down the street from the proposed Aldi, on the other side of Central Park Boulevard.
And Trader Joe’s will open within The Avenues at Northfield on the other side of I-70.
The neighborhood already has Natural Grocers and a Walmart, plus a King Soopers on the neighborhood’s east and west ends.
