The Denver divorce attorneys who won Renee Brinkerhoff nearly $30 million in assets, including a trio of La Loma restaurants, say that she has not paid them $2.4 million.
The multinational firm Womble Bond Dickinson represented Renee Brinkerhoff, 70, for 2½ years as she divorced and sued her longtime husband. The ugly litigation came to involve the couple’s four adult children and grew increasingly public, until a Denver judge threatened to sanction lawyers on both sides.
As BusinessDen first reported last year, Renee Brinkerhoff took home $29.5 million in cash and possessions from the divorce, such as La Loma locations in McGregor Square, Parker and the Denver Tech Center. She also received an undisclosed amount after settling the lawsuit against William and their son Mark, in which she accused them of stealing her stake in La Loma.
The Denver office of Womble Bond Dickinson is still waiting to be paid, according to a July 2 lawsuit.
“At Ms. Brinkerhoff’s request, WBD agreed to temporarily defer full payment for its fees and costs while Ms. Brinkerhoff was unable to access her portion of the marital estate,” according to the law firm, which represented her between May 2023 and December 2025.
Those legal fees came to total about $3.3 million, $850,000 of which was paid by William Brinkerhofff in accordance with a divorce court ruling. Womble Bond Dickinson is suing for the remainder.
“Despite demand, Ms. Brinkerhoff refuses to pay,” according to her former lawyers.
Renee Brinkerhoff did not respond to emails or phone calls seeking comment.
While it ended some litigation, the Brinkerhoffs’ divorce launched other legal fights.
In separate cases, Renee Brinkerhoff is suing and being sued by brothers Gene and Clark Atkinson. The former built her La Lomas and claims he hasn’t been paid; she alleges that Gene Atkinson conspired with her ex-husband to bankrupt her. Clark Atkinson says he is owed $1 million from Renee, since she now owns land on Denver’s Water Street that is collateral for his loan, originally made to William; she complains that Clark Atkinson is encumbering the property.
Those two cases are set for trial next year. Meanwhile, Renee’s La Loma McGregor Square is being sued for $87,000 that it allegedly did not pay a design firm.
William Brinkerhoff owns two former La Loma locations, in downtown Denver and Castle Rock, which he renamed Savina’s last year, along with Sierra in Lone Tree.
