The Denver Housing Authority has picked its new CEO after a national search and naming three finalists for the job last month.

Joaquín Cintrón Vega — currently the president and CEO of Lucas Metropolitan Housing in Toledo, Ohio — will start his new job in Denver on April 1, according to the DHA.

“Joaquín is a seasoned housing leader who understands the critical role DHA plays in the community and is committed to fulfilling the vision and strategy the organization has adopted,” DHA board chair Grace Buckley said in a statement.

Cintrón Vega has been in his current role in Ohio since 2020. Prior to that, he served as director of the Public Housing Division in Miami Dade County.

“I am excited to lead a team that has already done an outstanding job serving our community, and I look forward to contributing to our shared mission,” Cintrón Vega said in a statement.

DHA is a quasi-municipal organization that develops and operates income-restricted housing in Denver. Its portfolio of over 13,000 units and housing choice vouchers provides housing to more than 27,000 individuals, according to the organization. DHA has a budget of $402.8 million this year and approximately 390 employees, per financial documents.

Former DHA CEO David Nisivoccia resigned last August after two-and-a-half years in the role to take a position with a subsidiary of the nonprofit organization Volunteers of America. Joshua Crawley, who had been chief operating officer and general counsel, has been serving as interim CEO since then.

Cintrón Vega’s annual salary will be $327,500, DHA spokeswoman Allison Trembly told BusinessDen. Nisivoccia’s salary was $320,875 at the time he resigned.

The other two finalists for DHA’s top job were Yvonda Bean, CEO of the Housing Authority of the City of Columbia, South Carolina, and Terri M. Lee, chief operating officer of the Housing Authority of the City of Atlanta.
