From one-off studios to local and nation chains, the fitness industry is contracting.
Numerous CrossFit gyms, including at least six within Denver city limits, announced plans to cut ties with the company in recent weeks.
“We still have a fairly healthy membership base but nothing like before,” said the owner of The River Yoga.
“It took from Wednesday to Friday of last week to destroy our majority good reputation,” founder Patrick Harrington told BusinessDen.
The company said it reached out to landlords about restructuring leases, and “We were unable to reach an agreement with our landlord in Westminster.”
It opened in 2010.
“I wouldn’t be able to look my members and even my own family in the eyes and give them a good enough reason to not make this decision,” said one owner.
The petitioners accuse Liftopia of “failure to pay contractual fees,” and say they’re collectively owed $3 million.
The closures leave the company with 18 gyms in the state.
This summer, American tourists have replaced international ones, who used to account for 25 percent of the company’s business.
